Earn Your CompTIA Security+ SY0-701 Now, Before the New Version Lands

A new version of CompTIA Security+ is on the way, and if you’ve been sitting on your study plan, that news probably has you wondering whether to hurry up or hold off. It’s a fair question. Nobody wants to pass an exam that’s about to disappear, and nobody wants to study for the wrong version.

Here’s the short answer: for almost everyone studying right now, the smart move is to certify on the current CompTIA Security+ SY0-701 exam while it’s still here. Below we’ll walk through what’s changing, when the current version goes away, why waiting usually costs you more than it saves, and how to get ready with either self-paced or live instruction.

What’s actually happening with the update

CompTIA refreshes Security+ about every three years, so a new version was always on the calendar.

SY0-701 launched on November 7, 2023, which puts the next release right on schedule.

The incoming exam is commonly called SY0-801, or Security+ V8. CompTIA has published draft objectives and shared a target date with its instructor community.

Security+ 801 will release on November 17, 2026 as of right now, with preview access coordinated through your CompTIA representative on October 20, 2026.

Treat those dates as a plan, not a promise.

CompTIA has historically slipped announced release dates by three to six months.

When does SY0-701 go away?

You won’t get pushed onto the new exam overnight. CompTIA keeps the outgoing version around for a while so people mid-study don’t get burned.

During the overlap window both SY0-701 and SY0-801 are available to book, and you will not be forced onto the new version the moment it launches.

CompTIA hasn’t posted an official retirement date yet, but the pattern is consistent.

Based on the standard six-month overlap, expect 701 to retire roughly six months after 801 reaches general availability, which points to around mid-2027.

If the November launch holds, that lands the retirement around roughly May 2027.

CompTIA has even been generous with these windows before.

The SY0-601 retirement was pushed back to December 2024 from its originally scheduled date, so candidates typically have more time than the minimum guarantee suggests.

So you have real runway, probably into the middle of 2027. That’s plenty of time to certify, but it’s a finite window, and it starts closing the day the new exam shows up.

What’s different in the new version

Knowing what’s coming in SY0-801 actually makes the case for SY0-701 stronger, not weaker. The biggest addition is artificial intelligence.

SY0-801 introduces dedicated coverage of Large Language Models under Objective 2.4 and AI usage in threats and vulnerabilities under Objective 2.6, neither of which existed in 701 in any meaningful form.

Expect questions on prompt injection, model poisoning, and AI-assisted phishing sitting alongside the classic material.

The depth stays fairly broad, though.

SY0-801 expects a security professional to recognize AI-related risks and apply existing security principles to AI systems. It does not turn you into an AI security specialist. If you want deep AI security coverage, that is the job of CompTIA’s specialist SecAI+ credential, not Security+.

Outside of AI, this is an update, not a teardown.

CompTIA published draft objectives under the title “CompTIA Security+ SY0-801 V8 Exam Objectives,” and the structure keeps five domains, matching the 701 format.

The cloud content gets refreshed for how companies actually run things now, but the bones of the exam stay the same. Whatever you learn studying for SY0-701 carries straight over, so your prep time isn’t wasted no matter which version you eventually hold.

Why certifying on SY0-701 is the smart play

Your certification is good for three years, period

This is the part that settles most of the debate.

A CompTIA certification does not expire when a new exam version launches. If you pass SY0-701, your Security+ is valid for three full years, even after SY0-801 becomes the current exam.

Pass it in 2026 and you’re covered into 2029. Your resume just says “CompTIA Security+.” Nobody’s checking which exam code earned it.

Employers and the DoD/DoW don’t care about the version number

If that older-version worry is nagging at you, let it go.

A Security+ certification appears on your resume as Security+. Hiring managers do not ask whether you took 601, 701, or 801, and your CompTIA verification page does not show the exam code in any way that affects hiring decisions.

It matters even less for federal and defense work.

The DoD/DoW Cyber Workforce Framework approves the Security+ credential, not a specific exam version. A 701 earned today qualifies you for the same work roles an 801 would, and the approval persists for the full three-year validity period of your certification.

On the compliance side, the exam version does not matter, because DoD/DoW systems recognize it as “CompTIA Security+” regardless of series number.

The SY0-701 study materials are dialed in

Years of feedback have gone into the current exam’s prep ecosystem, and that works in your favor.

Study material publishers and training providers have had more than two and a half years to refine their coverage, practice exams have been calibrated against actual candidate results, and instructors know which objectives CompTIA actually weights heavily.

A brand-new exam doesn’t have any of that yet.

New exam versions take six to nine months for the study ecosystem to catch up properly, and during that catch-up window candidates are guessing.

Studying against mature material means fewer surprises on test day.

New versions tend to get harder, not easier

A lot of people assume a fresh exam will be gentler because the content is new. It usually goes the other way.

CompTIA uses version updates to add more performance-based questions, tighten scoring algorithms, and introduce harder scenario items, and SY0-701 was widely seen as harder than SY0-601 across the board.

Add unfamiliar AI material on top of that and you’re walking into more uncertainty, not less.

Waiting has a real cost

The hidden price of holding out isn’t the exam. It’s the roles you don’t apply for while you wait. Every month you delay is a month you’re not eligible for the jobs, promotions, and cleared positions that ask for Security+. The credential opens those doors now, so there’s little reason to keep them shut waiting on a date that could move.

Who should actually wait for SY0-801?

A small group genuinely should target the new exam. If you’re starting from zero and won’t realistically be exam-ready before the cutover anyway, studying the current objectives once, in their newest form, makes sense. The same goes if your target role is squarely AI-focused. For that crowd, the right call is to plan around SY0-801 and base your final booking on the official CompTIA exam objectives, not on previews.

Version changes don’t dent the value of the credential. The current exam reflects how security teams actually work today, and it’s heavy on doing rather than reciting.

Plan around the current format of up to 90 questions in 90 minutes with a passing score of 750 out of 900.

The largest domain is Security Operations, so if your study time is tight, that’s where the most points live.

CompTIA advises candidates to rely on the official exam objectives and handbook, not just summaries from forums or study guides, because third-party explanations often lag behind the real exam by months.

• Put your hours where the points are. Give the most time to Security Operations, then Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Mitigations.
• Practice hands-on. The performance-based questions reward people who’ve actually worked through logs, alerts, and incident scenarios, so build that muscle instead of just reading about it.
• Use current, SY0-701-specific practice tests to gauge readiness and get comfortable with the question style.
• Book with intent. If you can sit the exam before spring 2027, aim at SY0-701 while its prep materials are at their peak.
